On Monday May 6th, Kathleen Kroner, owner / partner of Owl Talk Clothing, gave a presentation to a class of Retail Merchandising students at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, located just a few miles south of downtown’s Fashion & Garment District.
The Retail Merchandising Department is headed by Diane Murphy, who teaches many of Trade Tech’s Merchandising classes, and encourages her students to learn as much as they can about the reality of working in the Retail world. Kathleen’s talk focused on Visual & Window displays, stressing the importance of showing off your product correctly to enhance sales, and Costing, how to correctly mark-up clothing & jewelry for retail stores. The talk was informative and interactive, as students did retail formulas on a worksheet, with calculators in hand, then engaging Kathleen in a series of questions toward the end. The questions were were a mix of costing, visual, and many dealt with the boutique that Kathleen owns and runs, as some of the students dream of selling their own product, and owning their own business.
Founded in 1925, Trade Technical College, was the first public two year college in the Los Angeles Community College District, and has the lowest enrollment fee of any Fashion school around, offering instruction in all phases of the Apparel industry. Trade Technical became the college of choice, when small business owner Kathleen decided to go back to school, and learn as much as possible about Retail Merchandising & Business. Several of Los Angeles’s, most influential designers graduated from Trade Technical, like Sue Wong, Carole Little, Tadashi Shoji, and Dorothy Sholen. With several brand new buildings, Trade Technical is undergoing a major construction, and I can bet that the resources and instruction that this school provides will only get better.
